Marie Larkin

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Marie Larkin is a fine artist creating mixed media paintings and drawings. Commissions accepted.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’ve always been drawn to things aged, weathered or vintage that tell a story through the marks left by use or time. Like rusting tin sheds and neglected exterior walls and fences, or driftwood and peeling bark, or the old furniture and found natural and man made objects I have collected and placed about our home, a history is sensed through the patina of colours, marks and remnants of previous coats of paint.

Creating a rich ‘history’ of marks informed by my love of well worn textures, is the driving element that underpins my current explorations. I strive to create paintings with an engaging balance, abstract in structure yet organic in my choice of colors, mark making and layered techniques. Each mark and application of colour leads me to the next in my creative path from beginning to the completion of a piece that for me is genuine and has integrity. I build layers in a process that is both additive and subtractive, beginning ‘in the moment’ with less intent as I apply paint and pigments and make marks with brushes and a variety of tools into the wet surface, to build texture and depth. I erase, scratching, sanding, scrubbing. I add, washing, making marks and lines. I conceal and reveal. The process that allows the expressive forms to emerge is both accidental and purposeful. There is an exciting element of anticipation and surprise process as I reveal marks I remember making and loved or discovering ones I had forgotten were there.

Having been a representational artist for over twelve years, removing the recognisable object or subject from my work has allowed me to explore structure and tension. Tension between the muted colors, subtle textures and marks with that of the bold forms that conceal and in turn reveal nuances in my paintings. I seek to create pieces that have a fundamental strength and stability while simultaneously having a sense of the transitory, drawing attention with a bold statement, but inviting a lingering, intimate contemplation through the whispered ‘history’ of ‘older’ marks revealed.

Sandra McMahon

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Sandra McMahon is a visual artist whose practice includes painting, drawing and design.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My interest in how we construct spaces; spaces to live, work, play and the division and perception of space. I am also interested in our response to colour and the emotional effect colour can have on space; it can calm or excite; it can recede or dominate. Colour, shape, pattern, repetition, harmony, discord, balance and texture are fundamental elements. Removing an object or subject from my work allows me to concentrate on making these elements the primary reason for creating. My work then becomes a mind game of problem solving – how big, what format, what shape or line, which colour, how will they work together? I endeavour to produce work that is resolved and visually pleasing.

BIO

Sandra McMahon lives and works in Tamworth NSW. Sandra has been working in the Visual Arts for over 35 years. Staring out her career as a Visual Arts teacher/ lecturer at NSW TAFE for 8 years before moving into the gallery sector where she has worked across a range of positions at 3 Regional Galleries and 3 Commercial Galleries in NSW and ACT. Sandra holds a Diploma of Visual Arts (TAFE), a Graduate Diploma in Art History and Curating (ANU), and a Diploma of Management (UNEP). She also holds a Cert IV in Training Assessment and Education (TCC) and is a registered Art Valuer under the Australian Governments Cultural Gifts Program. Sandra McMahon was awarded the Windmill Trust Scholarship in 2004 and has undertaken residencies at Hill End, Bathurst in 2005, Tweed Regional Gallery in 2017, Annandale Sydney in 2019, at Kandos, NSW and at Cockatoo Island, Sydney in 2021. CREATIVE PRACTICE

Figurative artist in painting drawing and sculpture.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a drawer, painter, sculptor of people. I love the shapes found in and around the human form. Body language is a fascination to me. I try to capture the slight nuances of movement within the human body that relay the mood of the subject. I want the viewer to be able to recognize what the subject is feeling, to believe that they are seeing some secret part of that person. I love to draw and draw and draw some more. Sometimes I think that painting gets in the way of a good drawing. Nevertheless, I do enjoy painting and my techniques vary from thin layers of glazes to thick textured surfaces. Every work is an experiment for me. I allow the work to dictate what technique I will use and often I am taken on a completely different direction to the one I started on. Every work is a new and exciting journey for me.

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Drawing and painting.
I am an artist and illustrator, interested in myth, fantasy and landscape. From fine art oil paintings to delicate watercolours, I love to work in any medium.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am inspired first and foremost by the natural world and have a great love of all things flora and fauna. Exploring and recreating specimens visually, I believe, opens up a new level of understanding and appreciation for form and function in the natural environment and creates a strong foundation from which new ideas can develop. In this way, I enjoy producing work which blurs the boundaries between apparently disparate objects and concepts, examines familiar objects from unexpected angles, and allows for the creation of new worlds, objects and anatomically plausible, if fantastical, creatures.

I work in a range of areas including natural history illustration, children’s illustration and commissions, and in a variety of mediums including digital, however, my preferred medium is graphite. Increasingly, I am exploring the many possibilities of combining digital and traditional mediums.

BIO

David Allan is an illustrator and artist whose first picture book, Two Trickster Tales from Russia (retold by Sophie Masson) was published by Christmas Press in 2013. Since then, he has illustrated three other acclaimed picture books for Christmas Press: Two Tales of Twins from Ancient Greece and Rome (retold by Ursula Dubosarsky, 2014); Two Tengu Tales from Japan (retold by Duncan Ball, 2015) and Two Enchanted Tales from Old China (retold by Gabrielle Wang, 2017). He has also illustrated short story anthologies, including The Stuff of Tales, published by Arts North West in 2018, and several Christmas Press anthologies, as well as storybooks for reading programs. His work is in private and public collections, and he has participated in solo and group exhibitions.

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Drawing and painting/ Children’s illustrator

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have loved cartooning, painting and drawing books and comics since I was a very young child, very much enraptured by cartoonists and illustrators like Charles Shultz, Quentin Blake and Sandra Boynton. It was a natural progression for me become a children’s book illustrator and author, creating my own world of characters.

I have had thrill of illustrating two middle grade children’s book series, Juno Jones by Kate Gordon, published by Yellow Brick Books, and the Edie’s Experiments series by Puffin Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House Australia. I also have a short story published in the Spooktacular Anthology, edited by Michelle Worthington, and am working on other books as an ‘authorstrator’ (author and illustrator).

I love all kinds of media, including gouache and pastels but by far, my favourite media are Indian ink, water colour and digital art (using my iPad Pro and Procreate). I really love messing around with loose lines and vivid colours both with the paint and ink, and digitally, often combing all three media. As I love illustrating for children and have strong memories of always wanting to “be a better artist”, I decided to create my own a children’s drawing channel on Youtube - Sandy Flett Kids Art School, to encourage children (and their parents or carers!) have a go at drawing and learn to draw new things, as well as showcase their own artworks.

CREATIVE PRACTICE

I classify myself as an 'emerging artist' who does commission work with Zentangles. I also dabble in photograph, pottery, watercolour an art in general

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have often dabbled in artistic practise with little or no training but as I grow older I am finding many different media to pay with. I have become enamoured of 'Zentangling' over the last two years and have been selling may pieces on line and at local markets, and taking on commission work in this style. I am currently taking courses in pottery and artist practice and have completed a digital photography course.

BIO

I have participated in two exhibitions - the Glen Innes Art Galley Christmas exhibition (2020) and the CWA Guyra Evening Group Exhibition (2021). I have entered my photography at the local show, earning 1st, 2nd and high commendation award. I have completed a hand building pottery class for beginners with Max Powell (2021) and am currently studying wit Tanya Robertson-Cunninghame, who is conducting an ongoing art course covering all the basic. I completed a digital photography course with Steve Wright at the Glen Innes TAFE (2015)

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Pencil on paper, black and white and colour drawings.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Sarah is a relative newcomer to the art world, but has always had a love of creativity, leaving school to study Graphic Design, during which she realised she had a passion for drawing, particularly portraiture and what could be achieved with the simplicity of pencil on paper. Her early works won awards, and caught the eye of Lloyd Hornsby, curator and owner of Gawura Gallery to encourage her to develop her art practice. In a short period of time, Sarah’s work is in high demand, being one of the sought-after artists at Gawura Gallery.

Sarah’s work is influenced by the Rural New England Region, having grown up on the family farm in Glen Innes. With a medium of pencil, and a focus on realism and attention to detail, she has a goal for each artwork to capture the character, emotion and story behind the subject. Beginning primarily in black and white, she has begun exploring colour and how that can add depth in bringing an artwork to life.

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Artist, Teacher, Drawing, Oil and Watercolour.

My themes are based on time, place & experience. I am environmentally inspired. My latest exhibition based on Water and Light was an escape from endless drought and fire. Painting for me is a problem solving, I have done it all my life, it is my safe place. Creativity is like capturing water in your hand, the more you try to contain it, the more it slips away. Creativity needs to be honest, don't pretend it is something that it is not.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Visual Arts has been a constant throughout my life. I commenced teaching Visual Arts in my early twenties, which hastened my own steep learning curve in gaining the necessary experience & qualifications. Creating art is about problem solving & that is the ongoing challenge.
